  • CONTENT AND PURPOSES

    In January 2008, the Municipality of Livorno decided to experiment an innovative type of decision making process concerning the renewal and the future use of the 'Cisternino', an ancient building historically used for water supply. The process was proposed by a citizen association, the “Laboratory for the future of Livorno”. The process had the ambitious goal to reflect on the present situation of the historical building and imagine a desirable future on the basis of the past.

    Dialogue with the City’s aim was to make Perth the “world’s most livable city by 2030.” It was a process of engaging Perth and the grater area’s citizens in developing a planning strategy for the capital of Australia’s growing city. The Government of Australia wanted a jointly develop a plan for the future of Perth with those people who will sustain the growth of the city in the future.

    Problems and Purposes

    The Municipality of Scansano presents a number of economic problems: changes regarding agricultural activities and the primary sector in general, less crop diversification, negative trends in local income. This is also due to bad management of the available natural resources, that produces many social and cultural problems, such as the decreasing use of traditional activities and practices and the loss of local identity.

    Summary

    This case study features a series of participatory planning workshops in Italy to develop new ideas and proposals about public spaces and poly-functional buildings. Representatives from local associations took part in thematic laboratories which discussed projects to improve public areas. These workshops successfully produced a number of proposals, evaluations, and implementation plans.
