    Bike Plan Hawaii 2003 was an effort to improve and enlarge the original Hawaii Bike Plan written in 1997. The Hawaii Department of Transportation wanted to make bicycling a more utilized method of transportation and promote bicycling in the state. The goal was ultimately to get public participation in creating a plan that would involve improving bicycling facilities, better coordination of land-use and planning, increased leverage in receiving funds for facilities, expansion of bikeways and bike trail mileage in the state, and achieving community consensus.

    Problem and Purpose

    Between February 2009 and March of the same year, the Municipality of Buonconvento (Tuscany, Italy) carried out the participatory process partecip@progetta.bc aimed at updating its Structural Plan; it decided to do so by involving its population in order to solve some critical situations, dealing with 'urban accessibility'.

    Problems and Purpose

    On August 11-12th, 2011, 193 residents of Seoul and the surrounding metropolitan area took part in a deliberative poll about the reunification of the two Koreas. Participants discussed the “Exchanges and Cooperation” program, North Korea’s nuclear weapons, and the government’s reunification policy. The deliberative poll was broadcast by KBS (Korea’s public broadcasting network) on December 4th, 2011 as a one hour program, part of a two-part documentary on unification.

    Problems and Purpose

    The ECOCITY project is a group of ten projects that are funded by the European Commission. This particular case study looks at the process behind the renewal of social housing on the northeastern outskirts of Barcelona. The objective of the ECOCITY project is to create patterns for the sustainable development of urban areas.
