  • EuroPolis was organized in response to the "democratic deficit" critique leveled against European politics. Through deliberative polling, it explores how informed debate can improve European democracy.The participants were selected from among more than 4,000 European citizens from the 27 member states of the EU polled for their views on immigration, climate change and the EU between March and May 2009. The findings from the deliberative polling excercise were presented in the Residence Palace in Brussels on the 3rd of June 2009.

  • Problems and Purpose

    G1000 is a project to revitalize and "advise" Belgium's current representative democratic system by complementing it with deliberative democracy.  It is a response to the increasing ineffectiveness of the representative democracy system, as evidenced in part by the 2010-11 parliamentary crisis.

    Problems and Purpose

    This case is a randomized field experiment, which examines the differences in decision-making and legitimacy in town meeting versus plebiscitary (direct voting) methods of decision. The experimenter - Benjamin Olken - examined this question in the context of decisions about infrastructure investments in Indonesian villages.

    As one of the projects of The Pew Center for Civic Journalism, the San Francisco Online Voter Guide was designed to assist San Francisco residents to make more informed voting decisions. This particular project is concerned with uncovering "where a candidate really stands on the issues," not by their speeches, but where their funding comes from and where it ends up - distinct signs of who the candidate's allies are as well as their underlying political standpoint.
