In 2002, the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) saw the completion of the construction of the Simhadri Thermal Power Project (STPP), a coal-fired power plant, in the Vizag District of India. The construction of the STPP, while having promised potential benefits and opportunities for local residents, had instead served to compromise their existing economic wellbeing. This case presents the latter’s response to their predicament through a public hearing with the participation of relevant actors, including civil society actors.

Between February 2009 and March of the same year, the Municipality of Buonconvento (Tuscany, Italy) carried out the participatory process firstname.lastname@example.org aimed at updating its Structural Plan; it decided to do so by involving its population in order to solve some critical situations, dealing with 'urban accessibility'.
The problem is that citizens feel that there are not enough outdoor recreation resources and opportunities, more specifically for those individuals that have limited access and use of the outdoor recreation resources for reasons including age, income, or knowledge. This case study features a participatory process to create a "community map" of a small Italian municipality. This project involved meetings of citizens, interest groups, and disadvantaged individuals, with the ultimate goal of defining a common vision and identity for the entire town.
