    The 1st Inuit Circumpolar Youth Symposium on the Inuit Language was a four-day conference during which twenty Inuit youths representing four territories (Canada, Alaska, Greenland, and Russia) arrived in Iqaluit, Nunavut to deliberate on issues surrounding the idea of a common language among all Inuit peoples across the world in order to promote a unified Inuit community. Due to the vast regions that the Inuit call home, representatives from each region discussed issues occurring within their own community, whether it is in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, or Russia.

    Summary

    Before making the education policy adjustments which had become essential due to low pupil turnout, the Department of Education in Northern Ireland sought to pay attention to the views of the parents. The goal was to create the required new rules within an atmosphere of cooperation. To attain this cooperation, a deliberative poll was held in Omagh, Northern Ireland in January 2007. 565 randomly selected parents were polled and then invited to Omagh College for a day of deliberation. 127 participants were given briefing materials on education policy.

    Background

    Figline Valdarno is an Italian municipality in the Province of Florence, Tuscany, with a population of about 17,000 inhabitants. In 2008 Figline Valdarno celebrated his 1,000th anniversary from his foundation. This represented an opportunity to rethink the evolution of public spaces and their usage. Attention was dedicated to the old town and particularly to the main square. The historical center of Figline is still surrounded by medieval walls and crossed by many narrow streets; its main feature is the medieval market Marsilio Ficino square.

  • The Mondragón Co-operative Corporation (MCC) is the world’s biggest industrial worker cooperative as well as a succesful and long-withstanding multinational corporation. It is an iconic model for the global co-operative movement, and operates under the ideals of participation and solidarity. In operation since 1956, Mondragón is based in the Basque country. It is indeed the Basque country’s leading business group, and the seventh largest in Spain.

    Summary

    This case study features a series of participatory planning workshops in Italy to develop new ideas and proposals about public spaces and poly-functional buildings. Representatives from local associations took part in thematic laboratories which discussed projects to improve public areas. These workshops successfully produced a number of proposals, evaluations, and implementation plans.
