In January 2008, the Municipality of Livorno decided to experiment an innovative type of decision making process concerning the renewal and the future use of the 'Cisternino', an ancient building historically used for water supply. The process was proposed by a citizen association, the “Laboratory for the future of Livorno”. The process had the ambitious goal to reflect on the present situation of the historical building and imagine a desirable future on the basis of the past.

    Summary

Participatory health councils allow Brazilian citizens to oversee the country's public health system (the Sistema Único de Saúde - Unified Health System or SUS). These councils exist at the municipal, state, and national level, and are supplemented by a national conference on the Brazilian health system held every four years. Though these coucils vary in diversity and in their success in impacting government decisions, citizens generally remain actively involved with the councils.

Since 1999, diverse community groups in Portsmouth have organized at least six rounds of large-scale dialogue-to-action circles (study circles) initiatives. This case study provides brief descriptions of four of these initiatives from 1999 through 2004. Descriptions of Portsmouth’s later public engagement initiatives will be added to this entry at a later date, or posted as separate entries.

This participatory process took place in Italy between January and October 2009 in the Saione neighborhood of the City of Arezzo, Tuscany. The purpose of this project was to address citizens’ complaints and concerns by carrying out an integrated urban regeneration and development project. Volunteers, community and local government representatives worked jointly in order to rebuild trust and enhance the neighborhood’s pride and sense of community by creating an environmental master plan and a program of activities for social, cultural, and economic animation.
