    Problems and Purpose

    In 2002, the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) saw the completion of the construction of the Simhadri Thermal Power Project (STPP), a coal-fired power plant, in the Vizag District of India. The construction of the STPP, while having promised potential benefits and opportunities for local residents, had instead served to compromise their existing economic wellbeing. This case presents the latter’s response to their predicament through a public hearing with the participation of relevant actors, including civil society actors.

    Problems and Purpose

    IntegrAzione was established to provide citizens with information concerning developments in a Roma settlement in Italy, especially in the district of Florence. Additionally, current legislation and policies influencing the situation of the Roma population were covered. The original purpose was to decide with inhabitants on local policies concerning the Roma settlement in order to foster integration of the communities.

    Summary

    This case study features a citizens' deliberation on the renovation of a public square in Italy. Many meetings and workshops were organized to take many different stakeholders' perspectives into account, including those of minorities and disabled individuals. The result was a successful, participatory decision to make some major construction modifications to the square.

     

  • Problems and Purpose

    Raymond, New Hampshire is a town seeking change. A community group called Positive Raymond collaborated with the University of New Hampshire's New Hampshire Listens Program to host a one day forum in which community members could come together to discuss how to make Raymond a better place to live, work, and learn. Framing questions for the conversation included:

    * What do you like most about living in Raymond?

    * What about Raymond do you think could be improved?
