    Summary

    This case study features the ten 2007/2008 Citizen Conferences, each consisting of 8 to 10 New Mexican Adult Citizens and lasting 9 hours.  This series of deliberative events was convened by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) and the University of New Mexico's Institute for Public Policy (IPP) to gather public feedback, so that the State could best meet the transportation needs of its citizens.

     

  • Aboriginal Participation in National Health Consultations (Canada)

    Problems and Purpose

    In April 2001, the Canadian government established the Romanow Commission to deliberate with citizens on the future of healthcare in Canada. However, the commission overlooked the serious issue of engaging marginalised groups such as Aboriginal people, and did not provide separate participatory spaces for such groups. While some Aboriginal people participated in the dialogues, the outcomes did not fully reflect Aboriginal health issues.

Nella provincia di Forlì e Cesena, regione Emilia Romagna, il processo è cominciato nel 2003 ed è attualmente in corso.

    Summary

     

    Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a process implemented in the 1990s where residents of certain regions can influence how their governments' annual budgets are allocated. After the collapse of its authoritarian regime in the mid 1980s, Brazilians implemented reforms to bolster their economic and political futures through participatory methods. These new democratic practices drastically improved the lives and social infrastructure of its participants.

    Problems and Purpose

    Under the slogan “Future Needs Solidarity. Diversity Creates Chances.”, the BürgerForum 2011 did not address any specific problem or problems; it rather allowed participating citizens to identify problems as well as solutions they deem most pressing for German society. The purpose behind this approach is three-fold. Firstly, initiators hoped to inspire citizens to be more excited about politics and democracy and instill a sense of community within participants.
