The Backbone Campaign’s goal is to give a voice to community members and the masses, alike, by way of “Artful Activism” (Backbone Campaign). Through the teaching of non-violent techniques and strategies, the Backbone Campaign looks first to give individuals the tools to have an effective political voice, and second to implement those skills in a manner that generates a dialogue between political leaders and those that they represent.
According to the Canadian Community for Dialogue and Deliberation (C2D2) website, the organization's mission is "to increase our society’s capacity to have constructive conversations to enhance decision- making and collaborative action, to improve relationships and generate insight and knowledge – in short, to strengthen democracy".
