"Community Policing in Chicago","Vbaj86","The Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) was launched in the beginning of April 1993 and was tested in five Chicago neighborhoods, after a brief developmental period. By May 1995 it had expanded to involve the entire Chicago Police's Patrol Division. This in turn led to the setup of beat meetings, which provide opportunities for residents and police who work for/live in these high-crime neighborhoods. These beat meetings have grown into major community meetings that help police identify and solve problems. Over time, crime rates in Chicago neighborhoods decreased."," Problems and PurposeThe Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) main goal was to open a two way channel of communication between the local public and the police department in order for them to work together to combat concerns and issues that each...","Tue, 12/07/2010 - 08:19","United States","Yes","Wednesday, March 31, 1993 - 16:00","","Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, & Corrections","","Discussion, Dialogue, or Deliberation","Local Government (e.g. Village, Town, City)","Consultation (i.e. to advise decision makers), Make public decisions (i.e. exert direct authority), Raise public awareness, Community building (e.g. social capital)","Open to all","Citizen Dialogue","Local (e.g. Neighbourhood, City/Town, Metropolitan Area)","Local Government (e.g. Village, Town, City)","Regional Government (e.g. State, Provincial, Territorial), Community Based Organization","Yes"

"Let the People Speak: New Jersey Citizens’ Tax Assembly (New Jersey, USA)","Haigp","The New Jersey Peoples’ Tax Assembly was a deliberative event conducted in 2003. It was organized by the New Jersey Coalition for the Public Good and was hosted in Trenton, New Jersey. The Coalition initially contacted 2,000 interest groups who would have an interest in tax reform. Eventually Coalition was able to narrow down the number to 100 with an aim towards diversity in beliefs, gender, and geography. In the end the Assembly hosted just fewer than 100 delegates. These delegates were originally shown a video on a few diverse expert opinions of New Jersey’s property tax structure. Next the delegates were given guides consisting of fact and important questions revolving around taxes in New Jersey. After being allowed an opportunity to create opinions delegates communicated in small group settings. They were each facilitated by trained facilitators; meant to guide conversation and record the viewpoints of the delegates. The purpose of the Assembly was to talk about reforms for a controversial New Jersey tax system and discuss steps that the State could take to move toward further fairness. After, the Assembly concluded The Coalition for the Public Good created a report consisting of the findings from The Assembly. This report has been shown and discussed at special meetings with the state. This Assembly has evolved into a much greater process as it now incorporates more people and more opinions state-wide.","SummaryThe New Jersey Peoples’ Tax Assembly was a deliberative event organized in 2003 by the New Jersey Coalition for the Public Good.  Its aim was to provide recommendations for specific steps leading to the reform of New Jersey’s tax system, commonly...","Tue, 01/03/2012 - 10:45","United States","No","","","Budgeting","","Discussion, Dialogue, or Deliberation","Non-Governmental Organization (Non-profit)","Consultation (i.e. to advise decision makers)","Random Selection","Representative Town Meeting","Regional (e.g. State, Province, Autonomous Region)","Non-Governmental Organization (Non-profit)","Non-Governmental Organization (Non-profit), Philanthropic Organization (i.e. dedicated to making monetary grants or gifts)","Yes"

"What's Next California? Deliberative Poll (Torrance, California)","sidotij","“What’s Next California?” was a Deliberative Poll that took place in Torrance, California from June 24th to June 26th, 2011. It was California’s first ever statewide Deliberative Poll, and was conducted by the inventor of the Deliberative Poll itself, Dr. James Fishkin, and his team of collaborators. The turnout was outstanding, with the participation of 412 registered voters gathered from around the state through a scientifically selected random sample. The idea for this Deliberative Poll stems from the mountain of controversy surrounding California’s governance, at both state and local levels. The intention was to engage Californians and introduce them to the deliberative process, as well as to produce substantive results that can be used by reform groups to potentially impact the future of California. The Poll involved three waves of questionnaires – one via telephone, one upon arrival in Torrance, and one upon departure – touching on four key issues: The statewide initiative process, legislative representation, local government, and tax and fiscal policy. ","Introduction“What’s Next California?” was a Deliberative Poll that took place in Torrance, California from June 24th to June 26th, 2011.
