"Let the People Speak: New Jersey Citizens’ Tax Assembly (New Jersey, USA)","Haigp","The New Jersey Peoples’ Tax Assembly was a deliberative event conducted in 2003. It was organized by the New Jersey Coalition for the Public Good and was hosted in Trenton, New Jersey. The Coalition initially contacted 2,000 interest groups who would have an interest in tax reform. Eventually Coalition was able to narrow down the number to 100 with an aim towards diversity in beliefs, gender, and geography. In the end the Assembly hosted just fewer than 100 delegates. These delegates were originally shown a video on a few diverse expert opinions of New Jersey’s property tax structure. Next the delegates were given guides consisting of fact and important questions revolving around taxes in New Jersey. After being allowed an opportunity to create opinions delegates communicated in small group settings. They were each facilitated by trained facilitators; meant to guide conversation and record the viewpoints of the delegates. The purpose of the Assembly was to talk about reforms for a controversial New Jersey tax system and discuss steps that the State could take to move toward further fairness. After, the Assembly concluded The Coalition for the Public Good created a report consisting of the findings from The Assembly. This report has been shown and discussed at special meetings with the state. This Assembly has evolved into a much greater process as it now incorporates more people and more opinions state-wide.","SummaryThe New Jersey Peoples’ Tax Assembly was a deliberative event organized in 2003 by the New Jersey Coalition for the Public Good.  Its aim was to provide recommendations for specific steps leading to the reform of New Jersey’s tax system, commonly...","Tue, 01/03/2012 - 10:45","United States","No","","","Budgeting","","Discussion, Dialogue, or Deliberation","Non-Governmental Organization (Non-profit)","Consultation (i.e. to advise decision makers)","Random Selection","Representative Town Meeting","Regional (e.g. State, Province, Autonomous Region)","Non-Governmental Organization (Non-profit)","Non-Governmental Organization (Non-profit), Philanthropic Organization (i.e. dedicated to making monetary grants or gifts)","Yes"
