Mission and Purpose

The Backbone Campaign’s goal is to give a voice to community members and the masses, alike, by way of “Artful Activism” (Backbone Campaign).  Through the teaching of non-violent techniques and strategies, the Backbone Campaign looks first to give individuals the tools to have an effective political voice, and second to implement those skills in a manner that generates a dialogue between political leaders and those that they represent.

The Center for Communication and Civic Engagement (CCCE) is a Seattle, WA-based organization whose mission is to understand “communication processes and media technologies that facilitate positive citizen involvement in politics and social life”[1].

Problems and Purpose

Occupy Vancouver, during the occupation of the Vancouver Art Gallery last fall, needed to implement a consensus-based decision making process in order for the encampment to function in a fair and inclusive manner. The General Assembly and it's processes were developed by consensus for this pourpose.

Mission and Purpose

PlaceSpeak connects people’s online identities with their home addresses so that they can voice their opinions electronically in a wide variety of forums. This provides topic hosts with confidence that they are receiving feedback from the right places.  We are advancing the public consultation process by creating an online platform that enables inclusive, informed participation, policy development and decision making.  Our goal is to bring back ‘power to the people', but do so in conjunction with proponents.

Summary

In January 2007, Newcastle University, the Center for Deliberative Democracy at Stanford, and the School of Education at Queen’s University conducted Northern Irelands first Deliberative Poll.  The goal was to obtain the opinion of parents with children in schools in the area on the future of education.  Both Catholics and Protestants were divided over how to solve a recent decline in students attending schools.  During January, 565 parents were polled and then invited to Omagh College for a day of deliberation.  127 parents who decided to attend the event were given briefin
