Problems and Purposes

The Municipality of Scansano presents a number of economic problems: changes regarding agricultural activities and the primary sector in general, less crop diversification, negative trends in local income. This is also due to bad management of the available natural resources, that produces many social and cultural problems, such as the decreasing use of traditional activities and practices and the loss of local identity.

1_ CONTEXT

In the second half of 2004, Venice Municipality organized a number of actions to involve citizens in the activities of local government. To this end a pilot Participatory Budgeting (PB) experiment was started in three different districts that are part of the City of Venice: Marghera (the case here examined), Lido and Favaro Veneto.

CONTENT AND PURPOSES

In January 2008, the Municipality of Livorno decided to experiment an innovative type of decision making process concerning the renewal and the future use of the 'Cisternino', an ancient building historically used for water supply. The process was proposed by a citizen association, the “Laboratory for the future of Livorno”. The process had the ambitious goal to reflect on the present situation of the historical building and imagine a desirable future on the basis of the past.

 

Summary

This article presents an interesting case of urban planning with citizen participation developed in Santiago de Chile. The case is primarily about the development and implementation of a standard methodology that allows for a real appropriation of public space by citizens, developing urban spaces that are sustainable over time.

Summary

This case study features a participatory project which aimed to promote civic engagement among youths in the city of Rosario, Argentina. This initiative involved numerous assemblies and public projects to encourage the participation of youth groups in political decision-making.

It is indeed the Basque country’s leading business group, and the seventh largest in Spain.
