MUNICIPALITY OF BUONCONVENTO: LAND USE PLANNING (VARIANTE AL PIANO STRUTTURALE)

Problem and Purpose

Between February 2009 and March of the same year, the Municipality of Buonconvento (Tuscany, Italy) carried out the participatory process partecip@progetta.bc aimed at updating its Structural Plan; it decided to do so by involving its population in order to solve some critical situations, dealing with 'urban accessibility'.

PROBLEM AND PURPOSE

Il processo partecipativo che ha preso il nome di “Il Padule che vorremmo” è stato avviato dal Comune di Ponte Buggianese con il sostegno dell'Autorità regionale della partecipazione della Regione Toscana.

Abstract

Il progetto La Bottega del Futuro è un percorso volto ad attivare il confronto pubblico con i cittadini, attraverso la partecipazione e il dialogo. L'obiettivo è quello di elaborare idee e proposte per migliorare la qualità della vita, attraverso il coinvolgimento di tutte le categorie sociali, ed è quindi rivolto ai cittadini, ai rappresentanti dell'Amministrazione e al terzo settore. L'ambito territoriale di riferimento è il Comune di Casamassima, una cittadina di 18.000 abitanti circa della provincia di Bari in Puglia.

Purpose and Problems

The purpose of the event which took place in Arezzo was to arouse citizens' interest in the district life and improve the knowledge of local administration, with the global aim of consolidating the link between citizens & institutions and between citizens themselves (creating a feeling of community and a shared awareness of responsibility).

PURPOSE

The purpose to have the citizens participate in the planning of new green spaces and ther square of the district. More specifically the goals were: • to create a new form of planning involving citizens in order to reach a shared project. • to elaborate proposals for the different uses of these areas may as well as rules and codes applied to these spaces; • to define different ways to organize these urban spaces and to involve people in making commitments and taking responsibilities in relation to the management of these areas.

Summary

Since 2002, the city of Grenoble, France, has engaged citizens in public decision-making through participatory committees and town meetings. Residents have been able to express their opinions and make recommendations on city planning, education, cultural life, and other municipal issues. Over the years, this program has strengthened local democracy and empowered public participation in important civic projects.
