Overview

Participatory decentralization is the process of handing out legitimate political authority to the citizens. It contributes to democratization by bringing the government ‘closer to the people’, imparting the citizens with political knowledge through their participation in local management, and making the government more accountable. [1]

Desde el Gobierno de Montevideo se lleva adelante, en el marco de una política de modernización y reforma del estado con participación popular, un amplio proceso de descentralización municipal y participación ciudadana en la toma de decisiones locales, creado por 18 gobiernos zonales de acuerdo a los diferentes distritos en que se dividió el departamento de Montevideo. El mismo fue un aporte fundamental a la democratización de la gestión comunal y a la construcción de ciudadanía, creando canales para la participación popular.

The Constitutional Council was a body of 25 appointed Icelandic citizens, which was charged with creating a constitutional draft between 6 April and 29 July 2011. Initially the constitution was meant to be revised by a nationally elected assembly, but following a controversial Supreme Court decision to void the assembly elections, the Icelandic parliament (Althingi) appointed the elects to form a council.

Gacaca courts are community trials, which try the perpetrators of the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda. They are a unique and large-scale national experiment in collaborative justice systems, and pose an important precedent for participatory community justice across the world.

The Mondragón Co-operative Corporation (MCC) is the world’s biggest industrial worker cooperative as well as a succesful and long-withstanding multinational corporation. It is an iconic model for the global co-operative movement, and operates under the ideals of participation and solidarity. In operation since 1956, Mondragón is based in the Basque country. It is indeed the Basque country’s leading business group, and the seventh largest in Spain.

Problems and Purpose

The UK Youth Parliament met in the House of Commons in London for the second time on October 29, 2010 to address five of the country’s highest concerns. Participants started to arrive at 9:15am and were officially welcomed to the gathering at 11:10am by the official host of the event, Assistant Serjeant at Arms, Lawrence Ward, in the House of Commons Chamber.
