The New Jersey Peoples’ Tax Assembly was a deliberative event conducted in 2003 organized by the New Jersey Coalition for the Public Good. Its aim was to provide recommendations for steps to reform New Jersey’s tax system, commonly seen as unfair. The Tax Assembly involved nearly 100 delegates whose selection was meant to provide appropriate gender and geography representation. These delegates given information to help them form opinions and guide their small group discussions. Facilitators compiled notes from the discussions into a report which was presented to the state legislature.

Introduction

“What’s Next California?” was a Deliberative Poll that took place in Torrance, California from June 24th to June 26th, 2011. It was California’s first ever statewide Deliberative Poll, and was conducted by the inventor of the Deliberative Poll itself, Dr. James Fishkin, and his team of collaborators. The turnout was outstanding, with the participation of 412 registered voters gathered from around the state through a scientifically selected random sample.

As the first participatory budgeting experiment ever carried out in Colle di Val d’Elsa, this PB process began in November 2009, with the goal of directly entrusting part of the municipal budget to young residents – ranging from 16 to 25 years of age. During formal and other autonomously self-organized meetings, the participants gathered to discuss and deliberate on projects aimed to improve activities for the youth, that the city administration committed to implement.
