    My work is primarily in adult and organisational learning and development. Ten years ago I was involved in a government sponsored community education project in civics and citizenship. And I have been involved in local politics in the area where I live for several years. Both of these experiences have given me a fairly dismal view of representative democracy. While it may be stable (we aren’t about to have an Arab spring), when many people’s engagement is a resentful vote (which is compulsory in Australia) every 3 or 4 years the system is weak.
