Biography: 

Dr Anciano is researcher and lecturer in the Department of Political Studies at the University of the Western Cape. She is a social science researcher with an interest in democratisation, civil society, and urban politics. She is currently a recipient of a three year National Research Foundation Thuthuka grant and a National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences Working Group grant. In 2008 she completed her PhD in Political Studies at the University of London, with her doctoral research focusing on the link between social movements, democracy and socio-economic inequality. Dr Anciano has produced numerous publications, including book chapters and journal articles.  Her co-authored book Democracy Disconnected: Participation and Governance in a City of the South, will be published by Routledge, UK in September 2018
