Biography: 

Patrizia Nanz was appointed as Scientific Director of the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V. (IASS) in Potsdam and as Professor of Transformative Sustainability Studies at the University of Potsdam in 2016. As a political scientist also helding a professorship at the University of Bremen since 2002, Patrizia Nanz has undertaken Fellowships with the Wissenschaftskolleg Institute for Advanced Studies (Berlin), Westminster University (London), and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The culture of participation in theory and practice

In 2009, Patrizia Nanz founded the European Institute for Public Participation (EIPP) in Bremen, providing advice to businesses, public authorities, and governments across Europe. She led the research area “Culture of Participation” at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen from 2013 to 2016, where her research focussed on participation as a mode for transformation. She has initiated and provided scientific advice to numerous participation processes, including the IASS-KWI project Demoenergy, where she worked with IASS Founding Director Klaus Töpfer.
