"From November 2019 to August 2020 the City of Vancouver has heard the hopes, concerns and aspirations of over 12,000 residents, employees, business owners and visitors as part of the initial phase of 'Planning Vancouver Together.'"

Problems and Purpose

The first year was a comprehensive listening phase designed to identify key community concerns, values and aspirations to inform Planning Vancouver Together moving forward. Community engagement launched in November 2019 with a Council public event, community and stakeholder meetings and a city-wide survey, and wrapped up in August 2020.

Over that time representatives heard over 12,000 inputs into the engagement process. This included:

  • a major launch event with Council featuring 12 site visits reaching 400+ residents, business owners, and organizational leaders;
  • 90+ meetings and workshops;
  • 10,000+ responses through 3 online surveys;
  • 16 in person outreach activities to field the survey; and
  • five youth-focused urban design charrettes (two online and three in community).

They asked about hopes, fears, joys and struggles, with a focus on those voices historically left out of municipal conversations.

The results give a clear picture of where Vancouver is today, pre- and post- COVID-19. In addition to identifying key areas of immediate priority, the input also helps inform goals and aspirations for the longer term.
