Problems and Purpose
Teatro del Barrio is an artistic, political and cultural platform created in 2014. The project highlights the role of theater as an instrument of social transformation and gives citizens a tool to participate in the cultural and political changes of the 21st century. A new economic model that proposes that citizens are owners and managers of the means of production. It is located in the old Triángulo room in Madrid, Calle Zurita 20.
Background History and Context
The Theater was born in 2014 from the need to create an open and assembly space that responds to the concerns of the 15M social movement.
Organizing, Supporting, and Funding Entities
Teatro del Barrio is an initiative promoted by the actor Alberto San Juan, the economists Mario Sánchez and Gerardo Domínguez and the architects Paloma Domínguez and Iñaki Alonso. The organization model is a non-profit responsible consumer cooperative. Constituted by a Governing Council, founding members and cooperative members. The Theater begins with a contribution of 2000 euros from the governing council, to this are added the contributions of the collaborators through a time bank, that is, work dedicated to the project without monetary exchange. The prices established for the tickets cover the minimum expenses of the premises, the payment of the theater workers and the salary of the artists who represent their work. The objective in this case is to cover expenses with dignity.
Participant Recruitment and Selection
The innovation of the idea is to get the community of partners involved in the project as active partners, supporting and promoting the project. Anyone can be a member with a contribution of € 100. The tools created for participation are: that contribution to the cooperative's social fund, critical debate, shared work for dissemination, internal project management, search for funding and the development of ideas. To start participating, just send an email.
What Went On: Process, Interaction, and Participation
The Theater is an open and assembly space. It consists of three lines of action: the Universidad del Barrio, stable cultural programming and a responsible consumption platform (see “Annalysis and Lessons Learned”). The Universidad del Barrio is organized by Juan Carlos Monedero, Emilio Silva, Noelia Adánez, Pablo Sánchez León and Ariel Jerez, a meeting place for researchers from all social sectors whose objective is to tell the unwritten history of Spain and which reveals the functioning of power in recent history, highlighting the civic struggle and social movements. It is a space for reflection and exchange of ideas. The coordinator for a new energy model is represented by Cote Moreno, actress Vanesa Espín and lawyer Jacinto Morano.
Influence, Outcomes, and Effects
The objectives of Teatro del Barrio are: Participate in the citizen movement Transform, through art and politics, those aspects of reality that cause social injustice Do politics through culture and party Develop theater, dance and music shows and poetry that provide useful political information for change Create a training platform. The theater offers a stable program of theater shows of political and musical humor, dance and poetry, where the debate focuses on the exercise of the power of the Bank, construction companies, large companies, political parties, unions and the media, among others. They also publicize citizen alternatives that throughout history have transformed this exercise of power. Teatro del Barrio is a permanent assembly from which to create new ways of seeing the world and building it. Platforms, associations and initiatives that improve the quality of life of citizens have a meeting space at Teatro del Barrio.
Analysis and Lessons Learned
A strong point of Teatro del Barrio is that it lays its foundations on responsible consumption. From the beginning, the project has proposed a creation process consistent with the ethical principles of responsible consumption, departing from the capitalist logic of the market and promoting a non-profit project. Today's society uses multiple mechanisms to make us impulsive consumers, generating frustration and dissatisfaction in society. The culture of responsible consumption is itself transformative. It is the citizenry that decides which goods and services are essential for community development and, on the other hand, which are those products and corporations that should not be financed with public money because they are considered contrary to the common good. This strengthening of the community as an entity with decision-making power requires information and coherence. Teatro del Barrio participates in the promotion of a new economy that is born from the hand of sustainability, social ecology and ethical banking.
The development of this project starts from the premise of responding to the crisis at the beginning of the 21st century with beauty and joy, party and humor, as the Lithuanian feminist and anarchist Emma Goldman already said: “If I can't dance, your revolution doesn't interest me. ”.
