Problems and Purpose

The "Bringing Racial Justice to Local Democracy" was organized to give racialized candidates a platform to engage in open dialogue with voters around issues of race and systemic racism. [1]

Background History and Context

Organizing, Supporting, and Funding Entities

The event was organized by the Broadbent Institute and Organize BC, both of whom describe themselves as progressive non-profits. The event was hosted by the Simon Fraser University's Harbour Centre in Downtown Vancouver.

Participant Recruitment and Selection

Participants in the panel discussion have all submitted their candidacy for office in the 2018 Vancouver City Council Elections and all identify as racial minorities. The event page does not disclose how they were selected. The event was free to attend and an online registration form was circulated by the organizers and event host through email and social media. The moderator, Cicely Blain, is a professional consultant, facilitator, and writer likely chosen for her advocacy work on issues of race and gender in Canada.[2]

Methods and Tools Used

The panel format allows each candidate to speak on their own, to discuss the topic as a group, and to interact with audience members.
