Problems and Purpose
The Observatory of Mining Conflicts in Latin America is an initiative that brings together civil society organizations with the purpose of establishing resistance strategies and alternatives to mining in Latin America. It seeks to produce research material that serves to influence decision-making spaces, articulate a common agenda for the defense of the territory with different social movements, in addition to generating spaces for regional coordination and dialogue. The last Latin American meeting of the observatory was held on November 7 and 8, 2018 in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Additionally, it manages the map of mining conflicts in Latin America, a digital tool that, through an interactive map of the region, allows to visualize the cases of conflicts between communities and mining projects, the cases of criminalization of the protest and finally, the popular consultations on mining. The decisions made by the observatory are made with the consensus of each institution, organization or group.
