The Mini-Public on Mobility (Mobilität) was initiated by a member of the Salzburg regional government. Across 1.5 days, 16 citizens created recommendations regarding the question, “Which roadmap is needed for our mobility future in Salzburg?”

Problems and Purpose

Background History and Context

This is the second regional mini-public held in Salzburg, the first being on on Citizens’ Participation.

Organizing, Supporting, and Funding Entities

This mini-public on a long-term mobility strategy was initiated by Hans Mayr (member of the regional government, responsible for traffic, infrastructure and housing).

Participant Recruitment and Selection

Like the two previous mini-publics held in the Salzburg Region in 2014 and 2015, the present one invites 600 people from the random population, to end up with 16 participants. It is unclear however which criteria were used in the recruitment process.

Influence, Outcomes, and Effects

The participants of the mini-public created a set of recommendations through consensus. Altogether there were 81, which can be clustered into a few groups: (1) strengthening of the rural area; (2) innovation for urban mobility; (3) attractive public transport; (4) citizens’ participation & funding; (5) better usage of existing capacities; (6) forward-looking strategies including digitalization; (7) good relationship between users of different means (walking, bike, car etc.); (8) factors for a successful mobility policy. These recommendations, after a public presentation, became, next to many other inputs, part of the new regional’s government long-term strategy for mobility “salzburg.mobil 2025“, in which the mini-public is mentioned as an integral part.
